Setting the Stage: A Global Community United in Purpose

Stepping into the NetHope Global Summit 2024, I couldn’t help but feel a surge of excitement—like a kid in a candy store. This wasn’t just any gathering; it was the world’s largest event for NGOs, a powerful convergence of innovation, collaboration, and purpose. Each tech demo, high-energy plenary, and specialized session unveiled cutting-edge solutions to today’s most pressing challenges, highlighting how technology is reshaping and strengthening humanitarian efforts worldwide.

Join me as I unfold my learnings from this event held at MGM National Harbor that brought together 600 in-person attendees and 1500 virtual participants from 117 countries.

A Powerful Opening: Keynotes That Inspired Action

Marked by the launch of the Partner Collective for the Global Humanitarian Information Sharing and Analysis Center (Global Humanitarian ISAC), the prime focus of the event was on cybersecurity and digital protection aiming to protect NGOs facing cyber threats. Expanding further from last year’s focus on adaptive digital strategies,skill-building and interesting discussions on climate adaptation and network resilience. 

In her keynote, Erin Connor, Director of Cisco Crisis Response, underscored cybersecurity as an urgent priority for nonprofits, highlighting the pivotal role of the Global Humanitarian Information Sharing and Analysis Center (Global Humanitarian ISAC). Supported by Cisco, Okta, and other partners, the ISAC initiative is dedicated to strengthening nonprofits’ defenses against cyber threats, aiming to safeguard sensitive data and fortify the sector’s digital resilience. This initiative is just one example of how cybersecurity services are evolving to meet the unique needs of the nonprofit sector.

Echoing on the same line – Lauren Stovall, Head of Nonprofit Programs at AWS, and Brent Carbno, Global ETC Coordinator at the UN World Food Programme discussed how technologies like climate data analytics and predictive tools can help nonprofits build resilience to vulnerabilities caused due to climate change. 

Nora Lindström, Senior Director of ICT4D at Catholic Relief Services, emphasized that building digital literacy among NGO leaders is essential for transformation and cyber resilience. She noted that skilled leadership fosters a culture of cybersecurity awareness, equipping nonprofits to better protect their data and operations from cyber threats. 

In-Depth Sessions and Workshops: Practical Skills for Transformative Impact

The keynote speeches were followed by sessions showcasing how technology is transforming nonprofit operations, with a focus on fortifying cybersecurity, enhancing climate resilience, and advancing data governance. Experts presented strategies that nonprofits can use to protect sensitive data, using predictive tools and cybersecurity services to mitigate climate risks, and optimize data management to amplify their mission without being affected by cyber attacks.
