Lumetronix* is a manufacturer of laser tools that are in turn used by electronics companies to cut, drill, and shape flexible Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs). In addition to their core offerings, the client also produces high-speed testers that support MLCC (Multi-Layer Ceramic Capacitor) testing — a critical function in electronic component quality assurance.
Lumetronix* is a global manufacturer of laser tools employed in PCB manufacturing. The company had been using an on-premise Tableau version for its analytics needs right since inception. Initially, when the user base was small, Tableau, with its rich and easy to use interface, came in handy for fast visual exploration. However as the company grew, and as different teams from multiple locations began to employ the tool for their own analytics needs, performance, flexibility and access constraints needed to be addressed.
Power BI emerged as a leading alternative, because Lumetronix was an existing Microsoft user. “I think some of our users can use Power BI without having to touch Power BI” Craig Bellamy*, CIO of Lumetronix Instruments, was referring to the Power BI’s lean learning curve. The native integration with existing Microsoft tools meant the users don’t have to learn a new language to create custom reports. Power BI allows users to analyze their reports even within Excel.
“It fits like a glove if you are already a Microsoft user”, added Craig, referring to Power BI’s ability to embed live dashboards right inside Teams channels. The integration benefits also extend with Power Automate, sending automated alerts when thresholds are crossed —and with Sharepoint online, there is less risk of document version nightmares.
As an existing Microsoft Enterprise License user, the bundled licensing model, which couples Power BI licenses as part of the M365, enabled cloud analytics for all teams at only a minimal extra cost.
“If we can cut analytics costs by 30% without losing functionality, it’s a no-brainer.” Ram Srinivas*, CFO, Lumetronix, echoed the management’s desire to move towards cost-effective alternatives.
For the migration to be successful, the users needed to have the visual sophistication that they were familiar with in Tableau. The drag and drop down canvas, rich customizable tool tips, and Tableau’s ability to send live queries to the data source needed to be replicated in the new solution.
“Migration is totally fine, but would there be a significant interruption in the flow?” Mei Lin Chen*, COO of Lumetronix, expected a smooth transition. The business ask was to insulate high-dependency teams, those that rely on the analytics tool on an everyday basis from any service interruption.
The team at Trigent worked to a clear set of priorities to ensure a seamless migration. Success depended on meeting four conditions:
Trigent must fully leverage its analytics expertise to ensure that the business logic is successfully implemented in Power BI, allowing a seamless secure analytics experience.
Each challenge was successfully maneuvered and key breakthroughs were achieved.
To ensure business continuity, Trigent began with those reports that were relatively simple and had low-dependency. The team then gradually moved towards complex reports with high-dependency. Post extracting requirements from Tableau, every report was rebuilt from scratch. This involved connecting to diverse data sources, data modelling using Power BI’s in memory engine, recreating dashboards, visuals, interactions, and applying row-level security, slicers, and drill-downs.
Trigent ensured that 120 reports were redeveloped in phases. Phase 1 saw 80 reports, Phase 2 – 30, Phase 3-10. Every BI report was validated with the respective Tableau report before user sign-off and subsequent roll-out.
A total of 120+ reports were rebuilt in three structured phases within a span of 10 months. The client realized a savings of $176,000 in the first year post migration.
The client teams were in favor of the new features in Power BI as there was a broad consensus to switch to Power BI, but certain Tableau features were too hard to sacrifice and those were expected to be replicated in Power BI.
“We understood that there were features such as the interactive tooltips, floating layouts that weren’t just nice-to-haves. They were a part of how they worked. There was a certain expectation that Tableau had already set. Power BI would have to match that experience as closely as possible. And Trigent made it happen” Chella Palaniappan, client delivery services at Trigent, reported.
14 key Tableau Features successfully replicated in Power BI.
In Tableau, users were directly interacting with live data, because the software is designed to allow real-time queries directly to the live source. On the other hand, Power BI’s in-memory engine is loaded with cached data. “Power BI is super fast, but it is still not live data” Timothy*, Data analytics engineer, Lumetronix, observed. The Trigent team came up with a creative solution by simulating freshness through frequent data refreshes.
The data refresh was set every 15 minutes which brought close to 90% parity with Tableau’s live-query experience.
The software engineers at Trigent were well versed with DAX. They manually coded the complex formulas, specifying filters, row context, and aggregation logic to the DAX engine. This is in stark contrast with Tableau which can be worked with simpler formulas.
Trigent authored and validated over 220 DAX expressions, including 35 time-intelligence measures and 10 role-based dynamic metrics.
“One of the best things about Power BI is the ease of setting up RLS” expressed a BI analyst during a client walkthrough. Trigent saw through a seamless RLS implementation. The models were structured with RLS in mind. The team built custom tables (e.g., role mapping tables) to ensure that the data was accessed by only relevant stakeholders.
RLS was implemented using a custom user mapping table with 2000+ user-role-region combinations, ensuring 100% compliance with internal data access policies.
| Before Migration | After Migration |
|---|---|
| Tableau (On-premise) | Power BI (Cloud, part of M365 Ecosystem) |
| Live connection to on-prem server | SQL Server (cloud-hosted) via Power Query |
| Real-time querying to source | In-memory querying with automated data refresh every 15 mins |
| Tableau Calculated Fields | DAX expressions |
| Ad-hoc Visual Reports | Centralized Power BI Workspace |
Lumetronix* successfully modernized its analytics, ensuring greater accessibility, tighter Microsoft integration, and improved cost-efficiency. While Power BI was a natural successor to Tableau, the shift brought real challenges—visual parity, business continuity, and logic replication.
Trigent navigated these with a structured, phased approach rooted in deep engineering. Each report was rebuilt from the ground up, replicating key Tableau experiences in Power BI. The result was a seamless transition that preserved familiar workflows and elevated performance.
Lumetronix* now operates on a future-ready analytics foundation—flexible, scalable, and cost-smart.
