Empowering Independent Freight Brokers with Advanced Digital Tech for Businesses On the Move

Highlights

A FreightTech company developed a logistics platform that enables independent brokers to leverage their industry relationships while integrating advanced technology for best-in-class logistics. With low upfront costs and managed tech ops, it offers automated bidding, real-time tracking, and mobile accessibility—features typically reserved for large 3PLs. This case study explores how the client’s franchise-based platform streamlined operations and disrupted the market.

About the Client

The client is a US-based logistics technology provider offering a franchise-based freight broker platform designed to enable experienced freight brokers establish independent franchise businesses. The proprietary platform equips brokers who have strong business relationships with shippers with advanced tools like real-time load tracking, geofence alerts, e-document management with signature capture, and in-app messaging. This enables brokers to provide faster response, streamline operations, and reduce costs. Beyond technology, the client offers comprehensive tech support, including foundational training, ongoing operational assistance, impactful marketing strategies, and continuous innovation.
By equipping independent brokers with the tech resources they need with minimal investments and zero overheads, the client enables them to efficiently manage operations, scale their businesses, and match the services offered by large 3PLs and trucking companies.

Business Needs

Independent freight brokers have a wealth of logistics experience, built deep relationships with shippers based on their intimate knowledge of their business needs and cultivated a network of carriers to fulfill shipments. However, given the size of their operations, they rely on traditional modes of communications such as phone calls, emails and asynchronous messages to communicate and transact business. While effective on a small scale, these methods are labor-intensive and inefficient, often resulting in manual workflows, missed opportunities, and limited scalability. Without an efficient digital platform, brokers struggle with order management, shipment tracking, and bidding processes, leading to increased timelines, pricing errors, and difficulties in competing with larger 3PLs and trucking companies.

The client intends to offer a unified system that integrates features like load tracking, geofence alerts, e-document management with order management, bid automation, digital signatures and real time shipment updates. They planned to augment their web platform with mobile applications that would allow independent truck owners/operators to access orders while on the road, match loads with shipment requests instantly, connect with brokers or shippers with in-app messaging that could improve fleet utilization and reduce empty miles.

This platform would provide brokers with the tools to take control of their business, build and expand their franchise networks, and achieve financial independence.

Business Challenge

Trigent’s extensive experience in working with Carriers, 3PLs, Brokers, Shippers, and FreightTech companies made it an ideal tech partner for this advanced logistics platform development. Advanced functionality to be implemented using deep tech included:

Self serve web and mobile portals for posting shipment requirements and capacity availability.

Automated bidding and negotiations with notifications.

Digital document management for order processing, BOL, customs, and freight forwarding.

Real time tracking, verified shipment status, driver resource management, and fleet management.

The project was structured for delivery within 3-4 months, starting with a 2-3 week discovery phase to align on requirements, followed by a 12-week development cycle and a 40-week support phase to ensure smooth adoption and ongoing success.

Designed specifically for the unique needs of brokers the platform addressed both functional and technical requirements with the following key features:
  • Brokers controlled access to tools that manage every aspect of their operations, from creating accounts and uploading contracts to inviting carriers via API integrations. The platform enables streamlined shipment creation and load management, along with access to a centralized bidding system for negotiating and finalizing contracts. Features such as real-time notifications, carrier database management, and invitation tracking enhances broker efficiency and collaboration.
  • Shippers have real-time visibility into shipment status and load updates. They can make changes directly on the platform without the need to call their broker for information. This simplifies decision-making and boosts customer satisfaction by providing transparency throughout the value chain.
  • Brokers can invite Carriers to join the platform, validate their credentials and store essential documents such as operating permits, proof of insurance, etc. Carriers in turn are equipped to manage drivers, submit or cancel bids, and update rate information. Notifications ensure smooth communication, while drivers receive mobile app access for real-time updates, load assignments, and seamless communication with brokers and shippers.
  • The platform facilitates direct communication between brokers and carriers, enabling bid negotiations and maintaining a history of interactions for future reference. Real-time GPS tracking provides transparency and accuracy in shipment status updates, while comprehensive activity logs fosters trust among stakeholders by minimizing disputes and providing a detailed audit trail.
  • Trigent implemented a technology stack designed for reliability and growth. The platform is built using .NET Core and Entity Framework for the Backend, React for Frontend, Flutter for Mobile Development, MySQL for Database, Google Maps API for real-time GPS updates, AWS (S3 bucket, EBS, SES) to ensure security and scalability. These technologies provided a seamless connection between mobile apps, the backend system, and APIs for third-party integrations.
  • To meet the client’s evolving needs, the platform offers customizable modules for bidding, tracking, and reporting. Detailed activity logs create a complete shipment history, reducing conflicts and ensuring operational transparency across stakeholders.

A key success factor was Trigent’s iterative approach, which included weekly demos to showcase progress and align with client expectations. This process not only fostered transparency and built client confidence but also allowed for adjustments based on feedback, ensuring a tailored solution. The success of this collaboration led to new opportunities, including a signed SOW for blockchain-based content creation to expand the client’s digital capabilities further.
