Maximizing Fleet Efficiency and Driving Sustainability for PFNZ

Discover how PFNZ leverages technology to optimize fleet operations and lead the way in sustainable, smart logistics.

About the Client

Private Fleet Net Zero Inc. (PFNZ) leverages technology to aggregate unused backhaul capacity from private fleets and offer it to 3PLs at competitive prices with improved service quality. They tackle one of the logistics industry’s biggest inefficiencies: 80% of the 1.8M private fleet trucks run empty backhauls.

Using advanced AI and multi-patented digital freight matching technology, PFNZ connects loads to available private fleet capacity, streamlines interactions with buyers, helps fleets monetize their backhauls while offering shippers cost-effective, reliable freight solutions. With integrations into popular 3PL Transportation Management Systems via Cargo Chief, PFNZ accelerates digital freight matching, facilitates transactions at scale and sets new benchmarks in fleet utilization and carbon footprint reduction, paving the way for a greener future in logistics.

Business Challenge

With 2/3 of private fleets holding “for hire” authority and capable of carrying additional freight, PFNZ saw an opportunity to connect these fleets with shippers who need reliable, cost-effective, flexible freight solutions. Unlike traditional carriers that operate on fixed schedules and require full truckloads, private fleets offer 5-20% discounts on backhaul freight as it is not their primary source of income. This provides a win-win solution: fleets monetize empty trips, and shippers benefit from reduced costs and avail quality service.
The demand for private fleet capacity is clear—90% of freight brokers surveyed want access to private fleets due to the quality of equipment and service—yet the market remains restricted due to a lack of centralized access and infrastructure. By creating a digital marketplace that aggregates and unlocks this backhaul capacity, PFNZ addresses an untapped $50B market opportunity.
To enable this vision, PFNZ decided to develop a bespoke Transportation Management System (TMS) platform with the following capabilities:
  • Aggregate idle backhaul capacity by integrating with Private Fleets: Integrate with private fleet operators, freight brokerage providers, third-party logistics (3PL) providers, and companies providing Contract, Cost, Compliance, and Control (C4) pricing tools.
  • AI-Powered Advanced Freight Matching Algorithms: Match shipper requirements with available load and lane capacity in real time, and improve backhaul utilization.
  • Advanced Reporting Tools: Real-time visibility into key metrics like lane activity, carrier engagement, and shipper demand essential for data-driven decision-making.
  • Sustainability Tracking: Measure and showcase environmental impacts, including CO2 reductions and trees saved, reinforcing PFNZ’s commitment to eco-friendly logistics.
  • User-Friendliness and Scalability: The system has to be mobile-ready, easy to use, and capable of accommodating business growth, seamlessly onboarding new shippers and carriers as PFNZ expands its operations.
PFNZ sought a technology partner to design a robust, data-driven solution that would minimize wasted resources, improve profitability, and foster sustainable logistics practices, while addressing the unique needs of private fleets and shippers.

Trigent Solution

Trigent developed a Custom Transportation Management System (TMS) tailored to PFNZ’s unique and innovative requirements. It seamlessly connects shippers with private fleets offering unused backhaul capacity. At its core, an AI-powered matching algorithm analyzes real-time data to pair shippers’ freight needs with available lanes, reducing empty backhauls and maximizing value for all parties.
The platform allows private fleets to list unused lane capacities, set preferences for lanes and equipment types, and accept load offers as needed—all without additional costs. Payment security is guaranteed through Allianz Trade, while early adopters benefit from “First Look” preferences for available loads. Shippers can upload freight details and track progress in real time, streamlining operations and enabling faster transactions.
Advanced API integrations connect the platform to freight brokerage systems such as Amazon Freight, Cargo Chief, Wal-Mart, Verizon Logistics, Pepsico, Safeway, and 3PL providers, enabling live load tracking, dynamic pricing, and smooth data exchange. Custom reporting tools provide visibility into lane activity, carrier performance, and shipper demand patterns and also integrate sustainability criteria into decision-making.
Unlike off-the-shelf TMS solutions that offer nominal CO2 emission data, this custom-built platform enables users to make strategic, eco-conscious decisions based on metrics like CO2 reductions, resource savings, and fine particulate outputs. This is critical given that medium and heavy diesel trucks, which account for less than 6% of vehicles on the road, contribute disproportionately to pollution—responsible for 25% of greenhouse gas emissions and 57% of deadly fine particulates.
Built on a modern tech stack, the platform features a React frontend for user-friendly experiences across devices, a .NET Core backend for handling complex workflows, and AWS hosting to ensure 99.9% uptime with proactive monitoring.
Its modular, mobile-responsive design allows seamless scalability, supporting future integrations and ensuring stakeholders can access the system anytime, anywhere. This means that private fleet operators could list empty lanes or accept load offers while on the road, while shippers could upload freight details or track progress in real time. This seamless accessibility ensured no opportunity was missed, improving efficiency and collaboration across the board.
The system also supported integrations with C4 pricing tools and additional 3PL providers, broadening PFNZ’s operational ecosystem as the business scaled.
Trigent’s agile development approach delivered high-priority features early, providing immediate value and ensuring the platform could adapt to PFNZ’s evolving needs, enabling operational excellence and driving sustainable logistics practices.
