The pattern selector reads a predetermined library of equivalent pattern sets and selects an equivalent pattern set for the declared pattern. The selected equivalent pattern set corresponds to the declared pattern and represents a set of equivalent declared patterns.

The natural language sentence is parsed for identifying possible parts of speech for each term and identifying probable phrase structures. Terms comprising one or more linguistic roles are identified. The possible sense combinations for the terms with linguistic roles are identified. Emergent categories are applied to identify possible valid senses for each of the terms with identified linguistic roles.

Parts of speech in the sentence are tagged for identifying parts of speech of each word and phrase in the sentence. Sentence chunking is then performed using the identified parts of speech of each word and phrase to generate pattern units.

The process of capturing and applying the reading style includes the following activities: determining the reading style of the user, creating a worldview of the user, and applying it to a document corpus, determining the information of interest, and reporting the desired information to the user in a report format.

The process of creating a writing style involves creating a prose style and report pattern style, determining how the report will look for the user, and then using that writing style to create the final report.

A rules-based system makes use of a specification that is similar to those used in earlier systems, such as in OPS5 but does not require the computational complexity of implementations such as Rete.
